Today, Wausau West High School students get a real-life history lesson. Volunteers of the 8th regiment of Wisconsin fired a Civil War-era cannon on the soccer field.
Wausau West freshmen were able to see the cannon up close and personal. The volunteers demonstrated all the steps it takes to fire a cannon, and presented information on the lives of Civil War soldiers.
"Nothing quite beats the experience of seeing a cannon for themselves," said Christine Kadonsky, history teacher at Wausau West, "They get a much better since of how large the cannon were."
Volunteers fired it off just once, but that was all they needed for students to really grasp its power. During the presentation, students also passed around authentic Civil War artifacts.
Kadonsky said the school tries to do this exercise once a year, bringing the Civil War to Wausau West High.
