Wausau Street Department Battles Icy Roads

Tuesday was a rough day for driving after hours of freezing rain and fog made for icy and then slushy roads.

Street departments were also challenged, making sure city streets were safe for everyone, while preparing for the next big storm that's set to hit later Tuesday night.

Wausau's salt supply started at about 5,000 tons. So far this year, crews have spread nearly half of it throughout city streets.

The latest storm system created an extra challenge for crews.

Along with clearing the slush, salt and sand trucks had to go over their routes again and again.

"Because of the ongoing rain that creates the ice we gotta do multiple applications," said Robert Andringa, Wausau's street supervisor.

He says the other challenge is keeping plows and trucks on the road.

Though they're big, several slid into ditches Tuesday because conditions were so hazardous.

For that reason, Andringa encourages all drivers to be especially cautious while out on the road and when encountering city plows and trucks.
