The Wausau Police Department responded to a strange call last week.

A Deputy Chief with the department says they received a call from two UW Marathon County students stating they had seen a man performing lewd and lascivious acts on himself.

Once officers arrived the man was gone.

But, this incident is just another reminder for how important making sure you're safe before heading out this spring really can be.

Responding to a call for a complaint about a man fondling himself in a local park is not one Wausau P.D. often deals with.

Last week, that's exactly what happened. According to Deputy Chief, Bryan Hilts, to make it worse, the man was seen on a park bench in the middle of the day.

Now, local departments are warning people to be cautious while out enjoying what's left of spring.

"It’s always safer when you’re going to be in a secluded area to be with somebody. Traveling in pairs is advice for anybody, not just this specific situation,” says Hilts.

Although situations like this one are not common, there are some tips you can do to make sure your prepared if this were to happen to you.

Deputy Chief Hilts says that always walking or jogging with another person can be the most important move you can make. Also, keeping a cell phone with you at all times can be great to report anything- such as strange behavior.

Running without ear buds or headphones is another big help that allows you to hear everything whether it be a vehicle or a person trying to harm you.

It’s still unclear who the man was, or if he frequents the park often. If you have any information, you are asked to contact the Wausau Police Department.
