Wausau Man Killed in Officer-involved Shooting in Eau Claire

The 24-year-old Wausau man who died after being shot during standoff Friday in Eau Claire has been identified as Christian A.N. Peterson.

Police tell WEAU-TV, a series of crimes took place prior to the shooting. They say around 6:30 p.m. Peterson was involved in two separate hit and run crash. Following the second crash he left his vehicle and fled on foot. Peterson then entered a home armed with a gun, confronted the resident and demanded the keys to the resident’s vehicle.

He then lead officers on high speed chase through downtown Eau Claire. The chase ended after an officer hit the car Peterson was driving.

Peterson exited the vehicle and fled toward an Eau Claire restaurant.
Police say Peterson was still armed as he moved toward an occupied truck that was stopped at the restaurant's drive-thru window. He tried to climb in the truck, but stopped as he was approached by a police officer.

The officer yelled several times for Peterson to drop his gun. He did not, and continued to move toward the officer. The officer then shot Peterson as he would not comply.

First aid and CPR were performed in an attempt to save his life.

Peterson later died an Eau Claire hospital.
