A 35-year-old Wausau man is charged with fleeing an officer, operating while suspended and 1st offense operating while intoxicated.
According to the criminal complaint, dispatch received a call around 1:46 a.m. of a possible drunk driver near Jackson Street and N. 6th Street in Wausau. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle, which was parked on N. 7th Street on the wrong side of the road, facing the wrong way. The officer activated his emergency light, but said that's when the truck's headlights turned on and the vehicle sped away.
The suspect is accused of driving at speeds more than 60 mph. The speed limit in that area is 25 mph.
The chase ended after nearly a mile. That's when police say the suspect, later identified as Jason Baur, exited the vehicle. Police drew their weapons and ordered the man to the ground. Baur was arrested without incident.
Baur was later quoted as saying “I made a bad decision”.
He's free on a $3,000 cash bond and will return to court on October 22 to see if he will qualify for a public defender.
