There's a new way to fill up, or charge up in Wausau.
The Ghidorzi company just installed the first Tesla high power station in North Central Wisconsin. The electric car charger is located at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Wausau.
Mark Asplund bought his Tesla Model S just over a year ago. The major selling point for him was the fact he never ever has to get gas. In fact, he even charges his car using a solar powered charging station at his home in Wausau.
"There's no oil spills. There's no transmission. There's no spark plugs. There's no oil changes. There's no oil filters. It's just a little electric motor. It's like a suped up golf cart. That's what it is," Asplund laughed.
But this souped-up golf cart comes at a price. Based on battery size you could shell out more than $90,000 for one.
"I don't think it's an investment at this point in time," Asplund said. "But I bet within the next five to ten years, electric cars will be cost effective."
On a fully charged large battery, the Tesla can go more than 280 miles. It can take anywhere from 40 minutes, if you use a super charger, to 12 hours to fully charge.
Still, Asplund says he'll never go back to driving a gasoline powered vehicle.
This new charging station is an important connecting dot on the growing map of charging station nation and statewide, giving Tesla owners charging access for travel to the Northwoods and Michigan's upper peninsula. The next closest charging stations are roughly 100 miles away in Green Bay, Eau Clare and Wisconsin Dells.
