In two weeks, a world class curling facility will open in the area. The Wausau Curling Center has been a ten year project, but the work is finally paying off.
The 40,000 square foot facility has a 20,000 square foot playing surface with eight Olympic-sized curling sheets. It's the only one of its kind in the country.
It took $4.2 million to build, with $3 million coming from donations from the community and foundations and $1.2 million from local industries and businesses.Almost every contractor that worked on the project is from central Wisconsin.
"We're looking forward to getting out and playing," says Corey Sandquist, president of the Wausau Curling Club. "We've been looking forward to this for a long time and it's going to be fun to finally get out on the ice and throw a few stones."
He says he's been overwhelmed with the support from the entire Wausau community,
Aside from the public using the facility, many high school and middle school students will use the facility. Sandquist says last year 150 high schoolers took part in curling and this year those numbers are up substantially.
