The Wausau City Council is giving the go-ahead to a ban on using the cell phone while driving.
The city's website says it approved the new ordinance on a unanimous vote Tuesday (2/11/14) night.
The law will take effect quickly, after it's officially published.
Violators can be fined $40.
Hands free and blue tooth devices will still be legal. As will GPS units as long as they're programmed ahead of the drive.
Several other municipalities in the Wausau metro area and state are also considering a ban on talking on the cell phone while driving.
Texting and driving is already against the law in Wisconsin.
