The Wausau Center Mall is getting a big financial boost from the city council.

Mayor Jim Tipple says it voted 11-0 Tuesday(5/27/14) night to give the mall $750,000 worth of economic incentives that include essentially waiving it's rent for the next 5-years.

In return, the mall's owners are promising to work to fill the vacant JC Penney space with a new store with a 10-year lease.

And work to change the mall from just retail to one that includes other attractions.

"It's a critical piece not only to our downtown but to our region. It has a lot of tax base to it. It creates a lot of sales tax , so this is an important step to partner up with the mall developer and make it the greatest mall that we can have," says Mayor Tipple.

The mall has been struggling with the loss of Penney's, Gap and Hollister in recent months.
