Wausau 525 Celebrates 10 Years

The Wausau 525 turns 10 years old this weekend.

Wausau's snowmobile showcase gets started on Friday and runs thru Sunday.

Organizers and volunteers put the finishing touches on the track today. Back in year one, no one would have thought it would reach 10, but here we are.

The event is near and dear to 525 President Ralph Merwin. The race is in honor of his son Flip Merwin, who was died as a result of a crash during the Eagle River Derby in 2003. Flip's sled number was 525. And money from this event goes to Flip's Fund, which gives money to cancer patients and scholarships. The goal is to build up Flip's Fund to $525,000 dollars by 2020. They already have approximately $200,000.

Last year didn't quite go as planned.

On the final day, a huge snowstorm hit the area, white-out conditions, and they managed only 3 laps before the drivers left the track and the race had to be finished two weeks later in Weyauwega, won by world champion Malcolm Chartier.
