Wisconsin Rapids Police Patrol Lt. Brian Krzykowski tells NewsChannel 7 crews have opened one lane in each direction on 8th Street after a water main break forced them to close the street earlier Sunday afternoon.
The break happened shortly before 1:30PM on 8th Street near Pepper Avenue. Both the northbound and southbound lanes of 8th Street in Wisconsin Rapids were closed for two hours while crews worked to fix the break.
"When it actually broke, two pieces shifted and we had six inches of water pouring in both directions rather than just a crack which put a lot of water on the street and made it look kind of nasty," Wisconsin Rapids Water Superintendent Dale Scheunemann explains.
Eventually traffic was re-routed, opening one lane in each direction. Scheunemann says he expects all lanes to be back open by Monday.
While no definitive cause for the break has been determined, Lt. Krzykowski believes its a result of the spring thaw.
