When the Neillsville Warriors hoisted their first gold ball last spring, they let it be known right away that their goal was to win the last state championship in Madison and the first one in Green Bay. Fast forward 11 months...and the goal is still the same.
"Obviously we want to win another championship" Said senior Lindsey Opelt.
"We want to get to Green Bay and the Resch Center" added fellow senior Alleah Voigt.
"I just want to get back to state and win. That's about it" remarked Junior leading scorer, Jenny Lindner.
And the approach the Warriors are taking is the same as last year. Don't Lose.
Last year they went 28-0. This season so far it's been 17-0. That's 45 straight games without defeat.
"I don't think that's normal for a normal high schooler" joked Voigt.
And all of the girl's agree the reason to their success is their coach. Who serves as Neillsville's District Administrator. He is as important to this team as he is to the entire Neillsville community.
"It's a great thing for me to be able to come out of my office and coach practice or go to games and be with kids. I think some times when we get wrapped up in budgets and other stuff we forget what's really important and that's the kids." said Head coach John Gaier
"He's a really great leader. He teaches us basketball and he knows his basketball. And he teaches us life lessons." said Caitlynne Naughton.
"He's not the typical motivator. He is the one who gets in your face and tells you that your wrong. And that gets you angry and motivated and better." said Voigt.
"He pushes us hard. He never gives up on us. If he's pushing you harder that means he likes you." added Lindner.
And with the post season right around the corner the Warriors are one month away from their second straight perfect season, and the chance to be the first state champions crowned in Green Bay.
