Walker Budget Could Hurt Microbreweries
Governor Scott Walker's recently signed budget could be bad news for small breweries in the state.
A motion was included that restricts microbreweries' ability to possess a wholesaler's license.
The provision could also de-value many small brewers' side businesses.
Before the legislation, brewers could establish a bar and sell thier own beer as well as beer from other breweries.
Now, that option does not exist.
"We own another business that's completely separate from the brewery that will actually lose it's liquor license because the language states that you cannot own a liquor license on top of the new brewers permit. That de-valued that business right there", said Marc Buttera, President and Founder of O'so Brewing in Plover.
The Wisconsin Craft Brewing Industry and many Republican and Democratic legislators were opposed to the budget provision.
