WPS to Wait Out Storm Damage in Wis. Before Sending Crews East

While Hurricane Sandy makes its way to the east coast, emergency crews and electric companies in Wisconsin are gearing up to send people to help clean up the damage and restore power.

But first they have to make sure they're here when the storm blows through the Midwest.

"At this point we're holding off our decision to send crews because the storm is scheduled to hit somewhere around noon-ish on Tuesday with forecasted winds about 50 mph," said Kelly Zagrzebski with Wis. Public Service.

Meteorologists predict the winds won't hit the north central Wis. area too hard, but WPS serves customers in Green Bay as well, where they are expecting major power outages.

WPS will make a decision Tuesday night or Wednesday morning whether to send help. It's part of two different mutual aide associations, the Wis. Utilities Assoc. and the Midwest Mutual Assistance Group. When an emergency like Hurricane Sandy comes up, utility representatives meet to plan where each crew is going. WPS says it's looking at sending five trucks to where ever the need is greatest.

If you do experience a power outage, make sure to give WPS a call, "Don't assume that [your] neighbors have called up," Zagrzebski said. "And just maybe tonight make sure you've got a little extra water in the fridge and a little bit of food that you can eat over a day."
