Village of Weston to Start New Recycling Program

The Village of Weston is set to start its single-stream recycling program Monday.

If you haven't noticed the new bins in the village, they have yellow tops.

Before, the village had a double-stream recycling program.

The Village Planning and Development Administrator Valerie Parker said the municipalities primary goal is to get more people to recycle, which hopefully will, in the end, cause less materials to go to the landfill.

She said the new single-stream recycling program will be easier, cleaner and safer for residents.

It will be easier because all the recyclables that were previously sorted can simply now go into one cart.

Second, it will be cleaner.

"People will not have to worry about milk jugs or other light plastics being blown all over their neighborhoods," Parker said. "Now that they will be contained in a cart with a lid; and safer (for both the resident and the recycling truck driver), they will no longer have to carry the multiple recycling containers out to the road."

She said residents pay a special charge of $150.00 on their annual property tax bill right now that covers garbage and recycling collection along with administration costs, costs for yard materials collections and maintaining the yard materials site. The fee does not include the costs of the new carts.

Parker said if you have old blue bins from the double-stream program, you can sell them online or give them to away to food pantries.
