A fire at a Vilas County church over weekend is being investigated as a vandalism case.

Deputies were called to Saint Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River around 1 a.m. Sunday morning for a fire alarm. When they arrived on scene they discovered someone forced their way in and caused even more damage.

Detective Charise Rozga-Anderson says photographs and crucifixes were damaged and a small fire was extinguished in an office.

"Further investigation revealed that forced entry on the north side of the church was made, and subsequent investigating showed that there was quite a bit of damage done to religious artifacts,” she explain.

The Eagle River Fire Department, Eagle River Police Department, Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police K-9 Unit and the Vilas County Sheriff's Office Responded to the Incident.
