The Vilas County Sheriff's Department has released the name of a 47-year-old woman who died following a swimming incident Wednesday afternoon.
A captain said Karen Wessel was transported to an area hospital, then flown to a Wausau hospital where she later died.
According to a press release, seven people, including Wessel were swimming in East Star Lake when three minors became too tired to continue swimming back from a sandbar. The adults swam out to the minors, but Wessel became exhausted. CPR was performed at the scene. Wessel's cause of death is still under investigation.
