Some wounded Wisconsin veterans are trading in their wheelchairs for paddles at the second annual Team River Runner Weekend at the Wausau whitewater course.
Team River Runner of Milwaukee teamed up with Wausau Kayak to host eight wounded veterans and their families in a weekend of kayaking and camping. The goal was to give veterans a chance to enjoy the course. Coordinator Craig Esposito told NewsChannel 7 with the help of volunteers and a little creativity they can overcome many of the vets disabilities.
"The thing about kayaking is it can take away a lot of disability on land. Anything mid thigh on down, I don't need if it is injured or even possibly missing. We can outfit around that."
Esposito also credits paddlers success to the course's safe design.
Many of the vets who participated Saturday also participated last year and hope to return again next year.
