Vaccinations for children are recommended by local health departments, but if you choose not to vaccinate your kids, you have options.
School districts offer an exemption for parents who have religious or personal beliefs against vaccinations. While letting the school district know is required, they use the information to protect your child.
"That information helps us in the event of a pandemic type setting," explains John Sample, the Director of Pupil Services for Merrill Area Schools, "or if someone were to happen in the community, then the students that were not immunized or vaccinated will be asked to probably come back to school a little bit later."
Parents opting for the exemption have until the 15th day of school to their child's school. If they don't receive that information by the 30th day, the child could be asked to leave school.
