University of Wisconsin Launches New Flexible Degree Option

Having an advanced degree is becoming more of a requirement in the workforce, but with family, work and other daily activities it can be difficult to get into a classroom. That's where a new program is stepping in to help. The University of Wisconsin's newFlexible Degree Optionopened enrollment on Monday. The program allows individuals to apply the knowledge and experience they already have to earn a degree at their own pace.

People can take different course moduals, which gives a set of requirements that individuals must meet in order to earn a credit.
Whenever they feel they can meet the requirements, they can take the compentency test.

"You have to demonstrate that you meet certain skills, and pass certain assessments. You don't have to sit in a class for a certain length of time, which is, more or less, what you do with a tradition degree," said Dr. Keith Montgomery, Dean and Campus Executive Officer of U.W. Marathon County.

There are two options people can enroll in. The first option is a three-month subscription that allows the student to take as many moduals as he or she wants and earns as many credits as he or she can in a three month time. The second option allows students to sign up for individual moduals that can be finish at their own pace.

The requirements of a traditional degree must still be completed in order to earn a U.W. degree. The difference between a traditional or online program from this new flex option is how students get their information and how quickly they earn the credits.

This program is not for everyone, said Montgomery. He said, people with prior work experience or schooling and those who are self-motivated will benefit most from this program.
