UW Stevens Point Student Government put out a survey to it's students asking them how comfortable they are having smoking allowed on campus.
More than 1,000 students responded to the survey, and the results were quite surprising.
The survey showed the majority of students actually preferred having a campus that was entirely tobacco free. That would mean no smoking of cigarettes, cigars, or even electronic tobacco products anywhere on campus. While some students I spoke with said the potential policy seemed like an infringement on their rights to smoke, others said it would be a welcome change.
"Personally, I have asthma so it is really hard for me to breathe even outside with smokers and it makes me cough and be congested, so I really like it. " says student Kelly Bates.
The results of the survey by no means guarantee that changes will come to the campus smoking policy. This was just a survey to gauge students preferences. However, the data does demonstrate that people on campus do support stricter smoking policy.
