Fans attending UW-Stevens Point Sporting events will soon notice a difference in their game day experience. The university is doing away with a fan staple in the name of going green.
The UWSP Athletic Department is doing away with traditional paper game day programs and going digital.
"We wanted to come up with an idea that would offer our fans something new, something that's cutting edge technology wise," Assistant Athletic Director for Media Operations Mitch Capelle told NewsChannel 7.
At every Pointer game, fans will see signs posted with QR Codes and a special URL. Using their smartphone or tablet, fans can scan the code or enter the URL into their browser. Once fans scan the QR code, they have access to a whole variety of information including game day rosters. They can even listen to the live broadcast of the game they're watching.
"This offers fans an opportunity to access what we update on a regular basis and after every event right on their smartphone," Capelle explained.
The effort is all part of UWSP's sustainability initiative which aims to cut down on wasted paper, ink and resources.
UWSP is not alone. UW- Madison just announced they will also be cutting back, no longer publishing their game day magazine for home football games.
"It's happening all across our state," Capelle said. "We just want to try and reach out to fans who are tech savvy and want to try and try something different."
The school tells NewsChannel 7 they will still print a small number of game day programs for larger events for fans who don't have smartphones.
