UW-Stevens Point Mulls Banning Alcohol from dorms

One year after a student drowned in a river after a night of drinking, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is considering banning alcohol consumption in the dorms, even for students of legal drinking age.

A Stevens Point Journal report says the school currently requires incoming freshmen to complete an online alcohol-education program. Students caught with a drinking offense are also required to attend a class to educate them on how alcohol can affect their health and study habits.

Vice Chancellor Al Thompson says barring all alcohol from residence halls is another option. Others include levying fines and hosting additional alcohol-related classes.

Stevens Point police Chief Kevin Ruder said it might make sense to expel repeat offenders. But Thompson says the school will judge individual students on a case-by-case basis.
