The Rhinelander Police Department is releasing new information about a standoff situation Tuesday afternoon that prompted a response from the Special Response Team, or SRT .

According to a press release around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police officers responded to the 600 block of Pelican Street for a man who was alleged to be armed with a handgun, intoxicated, and intended to harm himself.

Police say a negotiator communicated with the man in order to get him to come out of the house unarmed.

After more than six hours of negotiations and use of chemical agents by the SRT Team, the man finally came out of the residence and was taken into custody without incident at 10:16 p.m.

The police department is recommending criminal charges.
