The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department is investigating an early morning house fire in the City of Merrill that left a family without a home.

Crews responded to the fire on Wyant Avenue in the Township of Schley just before 3:00 am Saturday morning. The owner of the house had returned home to find smoke coming from the eaves.

Russell Fire Department along with the Pine River Fire Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Trained Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers were also on scene providing the family with food, clothing, shoes and lodging. Crews were on scene for six and a half hours.

Two adults and three children who lived in the home escaped without injuries, but two dogs were lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
