Traveling this Weekend? DOT Issues Updates on Road Work Projects

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides a weekly update on road construction in North Central Wisconsin, which includes the counties of Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood.

Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status.

Green Lake County

Highway: WIS 44

Location: Columbia County line to Kingston

Schedule: June 20 to October 2012

Cost: $4 million

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway with new asphalt, widen the shoulders; flatten slopes and remove or protect hazards within the highway safety clear zone. The roadway will be resurfaced with new asphalt. Other improvements include replacing all culvert pipes and replacing and adding additional storm sewer to mitigate street flooding

Traffic impacts: WIS 44 is closed to through traffic and detoured via WIS 33 and WIS 73. The highway is open to traffic between WIS 73 (Manchester) and Kingston. Local residents and businesses within the project limits will have access to the road during construction, along with local cross traffic at the County HH/Barry Road, County FF, Oak Street/Fountain Lane and County II/County H north intersections.

Iron County

Highway: US 51 and local roads, town of Mercer

Location: Just south of Beachway Drive to just north of Iron County J

Schedule: August 23, 2011 to October 2012

Cost: $5.7 million

Description: Crews will reconstruct US 51. Work includes local road improvements.

Traffic impacts: US 51 is open to one lane of traffic in each direction. Each lane has a 12 foot maximum width restriction. Local motorists can expect delays, single lane closures, side road closures, and flagging operations.

Langlade County

Highway: WIS 47

Location: Between US 45 and the east Langlade County line.
Schedule: August 27 to November 2012

Cost: $1.9 million
Description: Crews will mill and pave WIS 47.

Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 47 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter weekday flagging operations and some minor delays. To avoid delays motorists may want to allow extra travel time or take a different route.

Highway: US 45/WIS 47

Location: Between Langlade County B and County J east and the US 45/Langlade County B intersection
Schedule: September 4 to November 2012

Cost: $1.6 million
Description: Crews will mill and pave US 45/WIS 47. The US 45/County B intersection will be realigned to meet current design and safety standards.

Traffic impacts: During construction US 45/WIS 47 will remain open to the public. Motorists can expect to encounter weekday flagging operations and delays. To avoid delays motorists may want to allow extra travel time or take a different route. County B will be closed to traffic at the intersection with US 45. No signed detour will be posted. Access to properties along County B will be maintained.

Marathon County

Highway: I-39/US 51 (*updated*)

Location: Between Business 51 and Foxglove Road

Schedule: September 10, 2012 to May 2014
Cost: $12.2 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct the southbound I-39/US 51 lanes just south of the Business 51 interchange to north of Foxglove Road. The I-39/US 51 structure over Business 51 will be replaced and widened. The structure over the Wisconsin River will be re-decked and widened.

Traffic impacts: During construction, I-39/US 51 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter delays, single lane closures, ramp closures and lane shifts.

Highway: Business 51

Location: Between Marathon County L and Everest Drive

Schedule: August 20 to October 2012
Cost: $808,000
Description: Crews will mill two inches of the existing pavement and replace it with two inches of new asphalt to improve riding surface. Some curb and gutter will be replaced and inlets will be adjusted to improve drainage.

Traffic impacts: Business 51 is open to traffic. Each lane is reduced to 11 foot maximum width restriction with one lane in each direction. Everest Drive is closed to traffic and will not reopen until October. Motorists can expect delays, single lane closures, lane shifts, side road closures, and flagging operations.

Highway: WIS 29

Location: Between WIS 107 to County O

Schedule: August 13, 2012 to November 2013
Cost: $23 million
Description: Improvements include: installation of a storm sewer system to collect rainwater and snowmelt; conversion of the two-way, center turn lane into a safety barrier median; removal of all existing at grade intersections besides 144th Avenue which will have right-in and right out access provided by westbound WIS 29;Maratech Drive will be extended to 144th Avenue; and County O will be realigned to WIS 29 and a new WIS 29/County O interchange will be constructed.

Traffic impacts: WIS 29 is open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures, flagging operations and some delays. To avoid delays motorists may want to allow extra travel time. The intersection of WIS 29 and 120th Avenue is permanently closed.

Highway: WIS 13

Location: North Street (Colby) to Linden Street (Abbotsford)

Schedule: April 30 to mid-November 2012
Cost: $8.3 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct WIS 13 to a new urban, four-lane divided roadway. Work also includes intersection improvements, new traffic signals, new sidewalk, new railroad signals and gates, and new street lighting.

Traffic impacts: WIS 13 is currently open to one lane in each direction in the southbound lanes. Each lane is reduced to 11 feet maximum width restrictions. Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in the work zone and should be prepared to encounter slow moving trucks and flagging operations.

Highway: I-39/US 51/Maple Ridge Road interchange

Location: Between WIS 153 (exit 179) and the Kowalski Road overpass
Schedule: April 2 to November 2012
Cost: $10.8 million
Description: Crews are reconstructing the Maple Ridge Road interchange and the intersection of Maple ridge road and Old 51; realigning Kronenwetter Drive; replacing pavement on northbound and southbound I-39/US 51.

Traffic impacts: Motorists on northbound and southbound I-39/US 51 can expect to encounter single lane closures. When lanes are closed on the freeway the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph. The freeway will be open to two lanes in each direction on the weekends. Motorists on Maple Ridge Road and Old 51 can expect to encounter daytime flagging operations and single lane closures.
•The southbound I-39/US 51 off ramp to Maple Ridge Road and the northbound on ramp to I-39/US 51 from Maple Ridge Road are closed. The ramps will remain closed through September 4.
•Maple Ridge Road, between the new Kronenwetter Drive and Field Road is rerouted on the new Kronenwetter Drive and existing Field Road through September 4.
•The southbound on ramp to I-39/US 51 from Maple Ridge Road will be closed beginning Tuesday, September 4 until November.
•The northbound I-39/US51 off ramp to Maple Ridge Road will be closed beginning Tuesday, September 4 and will remain closed until October.
•Maple Ridge Road, between Old highway 51 and Avanti Drive, is closed and scheduled to reopen September 4. Traffic is detoured via Golden Hawk Way and Oconto Road.

Marquette County

Highway: I-39 southbound (*updated*)

Location: Marquette County D to the south Marquette/Columbia County line
Schedule: August 8, 2012 to October 2012
Cost: $2.6 million
Description: Crews will resurface the southbound lanes of I-39. Other improvements include bridge deck overlays at the County D bridge over I-39 and the I-39 bridges over County CX, WIS 23 and County O, ramp gates will be installed at the WIS 23 entrance ramps to northbound and southbound I-39 to provide access control during inclement weather or traffic incidents.

Traffic impacts: Motorists on I-39 southbound will encounter weekday, single lane closures. When lanes are closed the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph. Beginning Tuesday, September 18, the I-39 southbound lane closures will remain in place through the weekends so crews can complete the bridge deck overlays.

Portage County

Highway: WIS 34 and WIS 66

Location: Wisconsin Rapids to Stevens Point
Schedule: May 14 to October 12, 2012
Cost: $5.1 million
Description: Improvements include: resurfacing WIS 66 (formerly County P); resurfacing WIS 34 between Edgewood Place and the WIS 34/66 intersection; and replacing four bridges on WIS 66. Crews will also install rumble strips along the centerline of WIS 66 (Portage County line to County HH) and along the centerline and shoulders of WIS 66 (WIS 34 to the Portage County line). The rumble strips are designed to reduce run-off-the road crashes.

Traffic impacts: WIS 66 is closed to through traffic. Traffic is detoured via WIS 34, Portage County P, and County HH (Old US 10). The highway is closed at the four bridge replacement locations. Local access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout construction.

Price County

Highway: WIS 13

Location: North fork of the Flambeau River Bridge to 5th Street North in the city of Park Falls
Schedule: May 14 to late October 2012
Cost: $8.6 million
Description: Reconstruction of the existing four-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway; two lanes and a center two-way left turn lane. Crews will also reconstruct the existing two-lane roadway. Improvements include: curb and gutter; sidewalks; storm sewer; street lights; and the reconstruction of the intersection of WIS 13 and WIS 182 to better accommodate turning trucks.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter the following traffic impacts:
•WIS 13 is reduced to one lane in each direction between the north fork of the Flambeau River Bridge and County E.
•WIS 13 is closed to through traffic between County E and the intersection of 5th Avenue until mid-September. During the closure traffic is detoured via County E and 5th Avenue. Access will be provided for local traffic and emergency vehicles via cross streets.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 156

Location: Black Creek bridge between Clintonville and Howard
Schedule: September 10 to November 2012
Cost: $338,000
Description: Crews will remove and replace the existing structure over Black Creek on WIS 156 with a three-cell box culvert and rebuild the roadway.

Traffic impacts: During construction the bridge will be closed and traffic will be detoured via WIS 55 and WIS 29.

Waupaca County

Highway: WIS 22

Location: Between Cleghorn Road and Waupaca County QQ.
Schedule: August 27 to late October 2012
Cost: $1.1 million
Description: Crews will remove pavement and culvert pipes. The new intersection will include a raised median, left-turn lanes and a new storm sewer.

Traffic impacts: During the majority of construction activities, WIS 22 will remain open to two-way traffic. County QQ and Barlow Street (Old 22) will also remain open throughout most of the project. Barlow Street will be closed for a short period. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures, flagging operations and some delays. Some temporary driveway closures will be necessary during construction. Property owners will be notified in advance of any driveway closures.

Highway: WIS 49

Location: Between Waupaca and Scandinavia
Schedule: July 16 to late September 2012
Cost: $749, 000
Description: Crews will remove and replace the bridge over the south branch of the Little Wolf River.

Traffic impacts: WIS 49 is closed to traffic at the bridge, which is located north of Waupaca and south of Scandinavia. Traffic is detoured via US 10, WIS 22/54, WIS 22/110, and WIS 161.

Highway: WIS 54

Location: Between the Portage County line and Foxfire Drive (Waupaca)
Schedule: August 14, 2012 to October 2012
Cost: $2.2 million
Description: Crews will remove four inches of asphalt pavement, pulverize the remaining asphalt into the base and repave the road. Other improvements include replacing the bean guard and paved shoulder along both sides of the road.

Traffic impacts: WIS 54 is closed to through traffic and detoured via I-39 and US 10. The highway will remain open to local traffic for residents and businesses located within the project limits; however the surface may not be paved. Local motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and some minor delays. Access to Hartman Creek State Park will be maintained.

Wood County

Highway: WIS 34 and WIS 66

Location: Wisconsin Rapids to Stevens Point
Schedule: May 14 to October 12, 2012
Cost: $5.1 million
Description: Improvements include: resurfacing WIS 66 (formerly County P); resurfacing WIS 34 between Edgewood Place and the WIS 34/66 intersection; and replacing four bridges on WIS 66. Highway: US 10

Location: White Oak Road to Trestik Road
Schedule: April 17 to mid-October 2012
Cost: $17 million
Description: Crews will pave the new alignment of US 10 from White Oak Road to Trestik Road, which has been previously constructed.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures through late September.

Highway: US 10

Location: Klondike Drive to Wood County BB
Schedule: July 5, 2011 to December 2012
Cost: $12.3 million
Description: Crews are constructing a four-lane divided highway between Marshfield and Stevens Point. This project involves the construction of roundabouts at the US 10/ Klondike Drive/WIS 13 intersection, the new US 10/ County BB intersection, and the Central Avenue/ existing US 10 intersection. Crews will also construct and prepare the new alignment of US 10 for concrete paving.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter the following traffic impacts:
•US 10 is open to one lane in each direction with a 12 foot width restriction. Motorists can expect to encounter traffic shifts and crossovers.
•WIS 80 at the south intersection with US 10 remains closed. This location will remain closed until crews complete construction of the roundabout in October. During the closure, WIS 80 traffic will be detoured via WIS 73, WIS 186 and US 10.
•Motorists traveling south on US 10 will be able to access US 10 west. However, they will not be able to travel south to WIS 80 and will have to follow the detour.
•Motorists traveling north on WIS 80 will not be able to access US 10 west or US 10 and will need to follow the detour.
•Heritage Drive (old US 10) from Central Avenue to approximately .25 miles to the east remains closed. Access is maintained for adjacent property owners except for brief periods of storm sewer, grading or concrete work.
