Tomahawk Toddler Begins 2013 Cancer-free
It's the beginning of a new year, which means a fresh start and that couldn't be more true for two parents of a bubbly Tomahawk toddler.
Last spring, Jennifer Kim and Adam Massa heard the words no parents would ever want to hear- that their 2- year-old son, Sammy only had nine-months to live.
It started in April, when they noticed Sammy was having trouble walking and his balance seemed to be thrown off. After weeks of doctor visits, they found out Sammy had a very rare type of brain tumor-- one that would eventually take their son's life if left untreated.
"Within nine days they knew his was tumor was PNET, Primitive Neuroectodermal tumor, which is a Stage 4 fast growing tumor. He needed to have chemo to try and get rid of the rest of the tumor. If they needed to do surgery later to get the rest, then they would."
A specialist in Milwaukee removed nearly 80 percent of Sammy's tumor, and chemo took care of the rest.
Now, the two-year-old is in complete remission and tumor free. Something Sammy's parents never thought they'd hear.
Sammy spent this Christmas with his family and friends and is once again a healthy two-year-old boy.
Parents, Jennifer and Adam say they couldn't have asked for any better gift and they are looking forward to 2013 with a new outlook on life.
