The City of Wausau is bracing itself for an influx of people this weekend. Thousands of tourists are expected to flood the area taking in all the major events from the Balloon Glow and Rib Fest to Sidewalk Sales downtown.
Cheryl Rosenthal and her husband are from Beaver Dam. Like many people, they came up for Hodag, but found more than they bargained for in Wausau.
"There's lots to do. There's lots to see. Anything and everything to do," she chuckled.
The couple says it's no wonder why getting a hotel room was so hard. Kasey Taube, the director of Wausau Events, told NewsChannel 7 all the hotels in the area are booked full this weekend.
From neighboring Minnesota, to as far away as Alaska people from far and wide are pouring into Wausau.
"I've been getting calls from people in South Carolina. I've been getting calls from people Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota. They come from all over," Taube said.
That's good news for area businesses like Shepherd and Schaller who've been a staple downtown since 1949.
"It's great for sales and in the bigger picture it's great for downtown Wausau," store manager Seth Alwin explained. "Ya know we're constantly trying to figure out ways to get people down here because it's such a great area and there's so much to offer and when we can shine light on bringing people down into the Wausau area it's a win win."
But the Rosenthal's say what really sets Wausau apart is not the events, but the people.
"Just the personal touch. Getting a personal opinion and help."
