"We're educating them through our performance," Victor Albaum said.
Albaum is a member of the St. Paul-based theater group CLIMB, which stands for creative learning ideas for mind and body.
"It's an engaging way to show kids how not to bully someone or how to defend themselves in the proper way when they're bullied," Albaum said.
Performers like Albaum travel to schools throughout the school year, teaching kids with a 40 minute presentation.
"I think seeing it in a fun, theatrical setting, it makes it more enjoyable for the students and I think they retain it more," Albaum said.
Friday, the group stopped in Stevens Point at Washington Elementary.
The school's principal, Bill Carlson, says the workshop is part of a year-long program that teaches kids about respect.
"We brought CLIMB in this year as part of our PBIS program," Carlson said. "Part of positive behavioral intervention and supports, which is a way of teaching kids about appropriate behavior, about acknowledging kids with the appropriate behavior."
But the show isn't all fun and games.
"Around 160,000 students suffer from harassment everyday," Albaum said. "They stay home everyday from harassment reasons. And that's a big problem."
The end goal of Friday's lesson is to teach young people valuable lessons about being kind to others.
"We're just trying to be proactive, rather than reactive," Carlson said. "It's certainly a better approach than trying to react once it's become a problem."
