A new proposal by the Wausau School District and the city aims to increase the number of student safety officers on campus. Though the school district and police department have very different jobs, they share the common objective of keeping children safe.
As it stands now, the Wausau Police Department has three officers in place at both the high school and middle school level. If the new proposal goes through, we could see more School Resource Officers patrolling and keeping students safe at the elementary level as well.
The school district and police department noticed an increase in police calls to respond to elementary schools in the last 3 to 4 years and the proposal came as a result of this observation.
School Resource Officers are not only in place to patrol and keep children safe, but also establish a connection as someone students can trust. Officers often visit with kids in the classroom or lunch room settings to let the students know early on that they are available for assistance.
