The Psychology of Color: Is Blue Making You Fat?

A new study by Northwestern University suggests the blue lights on our cellphones may be making us fat. Researchers found a link between blue light emitted by our phones and tablets and increased hunger levels. But it's not the color giving us those love handles.

"If you want to lose weight, use blue food," behavioral specialist Dr. Barbara Lonsdorf laughed.

Dr. Lonsdorf explained studies have actually shown the color blue to be an appetite suppressant. So while going on a all blue may be a joke, the psychology of color most certainly is not.

"There's a lot of research in the field of color psychology," Dr. Lonsdorf told NewsChannel 7.

In addition to suppressing appetite, the color blue is also supposed to have a calming effect. That's what makes it an ideal color for bedrooms.

The color green also tends to have a soothing effect.

"Hospitals use a lot of green because its got a restfulness, a healing kind of bodily reaction," Dr. Lonsdorf explained.

Pink, Dr. Londsdorf said, evokes emotions of tranquility.

"My office that I inherited has pink tones in it. When I watch people come into my office there's a visual drop in tension."

White is associated with innocence and purity. Black is the color of submission. Purple evokes feelings of royalty and maturity. Finally, Dr. Lonsdorf said yellow, which we normally associate with happiness and cheerfulness, can actually cause people to become quick tempered when exposed to the color in high doses.

While the psychology behind our emotional reaction to color is real, Dr. Lonsdorf said the blue in the light emitted from our cellphones does not make us fat. She thinks weight gain is more a result of exposure to light than color. That's because the light from our cellphones and electronic devices keeps us awake and it's lack of sleep that ultimately causes increased hunger levels.
