Sylvan Hill, Nine Mile, Skating Rinks Opening Soon in Marathon County

Three popular winter sport areas are scheduled to open in Wausau in the next few days.

The Marathon County Parks and Rec Department said Friday both Sylvan Hill and the 400 Block ice skating rink will open. Nine Mile will open for skiing, Monday.

The Sylvan Hill tubing hill is open Fridays from 6 pm to 9:30 pm; Saturdays: 1:30 pm to 5 pm and 6 pm to 9:30 pm; and Sundays from 1:30 pm to 5 pm. Sylvan Hill is located at 1329 Sylvan Street in Wausau

2013-2014 Public Tubing Fees:
$8.50/session - Adult (14 and older)
$6.00/session - Child (42" to 13 yrs old); must be 42" to ride a tube.

The 400 Block skating rink will open for the season at 5:30pm. on Friday, December 13. Hours for the outdoor rinks are 5:30pm. until 8:00pm Monday through Friday; 1:00pm until 8:00pm on Saturdays; and 1:00pm until 4:30pm on Sundays.

Holiday hours are 1:00pm until 8:00pm Monday through Saturday and 1:00pm until 4:30pm on Sunday. The holiday schedule starts December 23, 2013, and ends January 1, 2014. Rinks will close at 4:00pm on December 24 and will be closed all day on December 25.
Other outdoor ice rinks will open as conditions allow. All rinks, except Brockmeyer Hockey, have lights for night skating and there are warming houses at all rinks except John Marshall School. Any time the combined air and wind temperature falls to -20 degrees or colder, all rinks will close.
The locations of the City of Wausau outdoor ice rinks are at the 400 Block, Downtown Wausau; John Marshall School, 1918 Lamont Street; Bockmeyer Park, 4200 Stettin Drive; Grant School, 500 N Fourth Avenue and Riverview School, 4303 E Troy Street.

And beginning Monday, Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. Nine Mile will open for skiing.

According to the Parks and Rec. Dept, the entire 30 km of cross-country ski trails have been groomed with skating lanes and limited track. They say there is a 2" base and conditions are fair, with good skate skiing. Ski Trail J is marginal at best. There is 2" of fluffy snow in the woods and we have received about 1" of new snow in the last 24 hours. There is snow in the forecast.

Daily and season ski passes may be purchased at the Chalet during the course of the season.

The $6 After Hour Ski Pass will be available to purchase at the self-registration station located in the chalet parking lot. Any person 12 years of age and older is required to have a pass if they show up to ski at Nine Mile after the chalet is closed for the day.
