Two Dane County sheriff's deputies are recovering from stab wounds suffered during an altercation with a suspect who was fatally shot.
The deputies responded to a residence north of New Glarus Thursday and found an elderly couple with significant injuries suffered in apparent beating. Sheriff Dave Mahoney says while the deputies were in the home they were attacked and stabbed by the son of the injured couple. A third deputy shot and killed the man.
Mahoney says the injured deputies were taken by helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison where one underwent surgery. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
The homeowners who suffered injuries were taken by ambulance to a Madison hospital. Their conditions haven't been released.
The shooting will be investigated by an outside agency.
