Susan G. Komen for the Cure Halts Partnerships with Planned Parenthood

NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its financial partnerships with numerous Planned Parenthood affiliates.

The result is a bitter rift, linked to the national abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

Planned Parenthood says the cutoff, affecting grants for breast exams, results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion groups. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress -- a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion activists.

The Komen grants, which totaled about $680,000 last year and $580,000 in 2010, went to at least 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates for breast-cancer screening and related services. Planned Parenthood hopes to raise new funds to fill the gap.

the issue is privacy an womens health thats the bottom line. What I havce read and seen the "so-called righteous right to life so called pro-life movement." Is when they don't get there way will resort to political armstronging to harrassement and if all else fails murder. How can an organization as the right to life movement resort to utter terrorism. We need to target this movement as a terrorist organization. Why Only terrorist will resort to these extreme measures behind a cross and bible and say this in the name of God.Women are willing to do everything they can for their life and well being first. A fetus's life attched to the woman they become one and there is only one person who can decide the fate of the develping embryo. Why make it our business to be in the lives between doctor and patient? Or in the instance be in the business of peoples bedrooms? I really don't think the so called pro-life pro terrorist organization doesn't want to have their bedroom or dotor patient confidentiality be compromised. So why should it be there right to be in the business of others? Hey you self righteous so called moralist get your own life and mind your own business.!!!!!

The amount of coverage on this subject will hurt donations. I guess they should think of this. All health care should figure into a donation. I would compare this to abortion. No one wants it, but you save one life or another in certain instances. If the mother has a chance of dying, what is the difference of one or the other? Someone will die. It is a two sided sword. But it will cause death. Who can argue there will be a death?

Unfortunately the health of a pregnant woman it only inportant when someone wants to exploit it. Medical is medical care. Breast aren't the only place where cancer grows and PP does screen those.

PP does not fund mammograms....call and ask them, you'll find out the truth.
  • by wisen up Location: wausau on Feb 2, 2012 at 12:39 PM
PP doesn't do mammograms. And if you don't have insurance, they can't tell you anywhere to get one. I can google and get more information than PP will give me. And it doesn't cost $600,000.

The majority of PP offices don't do breast cancer screenings. They are all abortions mills, killing thousands of babies. Now I CAN give to Susan G Komen. I couldn't before because I can't give money in order to kill babies.

Virginia, you hit the nail right on the head! My parents had health insurance, but the cost of a co-pay, even for a routine medical examination was very costly. So I waited until I was 18 and no longer on their insurance before I received my very first Pap & Pelvic Exam-with Breast Examination. I went through Planned Parenthood to have this done, and for the next 2 years-I went through them to receive check ups and birth control medication to regulate my menstrual cycle. When I got my first full-time job and health insurance, I decided to pay it back to Planned Parenthood in the form of a donation. I very much appreciate the services that they offer to women and men-yes men, please check their site for details. Because of Planned Parenthood, I discovered that the pain I felt when I was close to ovulating was associated with an ovarian cyst that was on my right ovary. I learned that I didn't have to suffer through 2 weeks of bleeding every month and that with low doses of horomones-through birth control, I could control and regulate my menstrual cycles so I could be between the normal 24-28 days. It has been 5 years since I last needed to use their facilities, and I am no longer in need of birth control to regulate myself. I am not pregnant, I don't have unplanned children or any STD's. My paps and breast examinations are clean and I am in good reproductive health. Thank you Planned Parenthood for helping those in tough situations get the preventative and helpful care they need.

Penny, there is no problem with all the things you stated. However, people who donate money to Komen thought their money was going to breast cancer research or helping women with breast cancer. PP doesn't do either. They don't even do mammograms.

I will never give to Susan G. Komen again. All the good done by Planned Parenthood is much more important and community oriented than this publicity stunt done by the Korman foundation.

So, its ok to not fund lifesaving mamograms for women so they die...is it their choice?

Not the only place in town where a man can get a mammogram. Oh wait, it's for women only. Who cares about men and their prostate cancer? Planned parenthood didn't offer that did they? Must be because it is the number 1 cancer. Guess what my Dad died from?

You are right, Ginger. I never thought about that. How do men get free cancer screenings? Oh wait, PP only cares about making sure they save the life of white women.

Too many times the child pays the price for the sins of the mother and father. I'm glad to see their funding cut off. At what point was I no longer considered an "it".

It will be considered an "it" regardless if it is born or not. The child pays just the same. Shameful for the organization to cutoff funding, I will no longer support the Komen foundation. Have you seen the kids out there lately, a little clorine in the pool couldn't hurt.
