PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) -- Supervalu plans to lay off 117 employees in Pleasant Prairie as a result of closing its distribution center there.

The company, based in Eden Prairie, Minn., filed a layoff notice Tuesday with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The layoffs will start in March, and the center will close by May 1.

Supervalu had previously disclosed plans to close the food distribution center. The food wholesaler has lost sales in Wisconsin as the Sentry supermarket chain has declined.

In October, Supervalu said it was selling the facility to Meijer Inc. Supervalu said it would instead serve customers from its Green Bay distribution center.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Department of Workforce Development and the Southeastern Wisconsin Workforce Development Board will provide job placement services to the affected workers.
