Sun Prairie Woman Sentenced in Texting & Driving Homicide

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Sun Prairie woman will serve a year in prison for a fatal crash that happened after she was texting while driving.

Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke on Friday rejected recommendations of probation for 21-year-old Stephanie Kanoff. Kanoff also will serve two years of extended supervision after her prison time.

Kanoff choked up as she told the judge she is sorry for the crash.

A jury found Kanoff guilty in July of homicide by negligent driving in the death of University of Wisconsin-Madison student Dylan Ellefson. The 21-year-old was behind his disabled car when he was struck by Kanoff's minivan on Oct. 24, 2010.

Ellefson's father, Dan Ellefson, says he's satisfied with the
sentence.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the prosecutor had argued for a two-year prison term.
