OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- This year's sturgeon-spearing season on Lake Winnebago will likely go the entire 16 day season.
Ron Bruch of the state Department of Natural Resources says 27 sturgeon were speared on Sunday to bring the weekend total to 66 on the lake. He says the cold weather has slightly improved ice conditions.
Activity was better on the Upriver Lakes of Buttes des Morts, Winneconne and Poygan. He says people there speared 242 fish Saturday and Sunday and they closed the season Sunday. The two days is the shortest season since the lottery fishery began in 2007.
Even though a record 12,680 licenses were sold for this season, Bruch has said many people were staying away because of ice conditions.
