Kids Voting USA Holds Mock Election in Wausau

The election for Wisconsin governor may still be eight months away,
but today high school students from around the state got to hold their own gubernatioral election and debate.

It was all part of an event held at UW Marathon County by the Kids Voting USA organization.

Today served as an opportunity for students to hold mock Republican and Democratic state conventions and then chose a candidate to represent each party.

Students even had a chance to hold a mock debate.
Event organizers say it was a great real-world experience for these kids.

"The students were debating their party platforms and it was so interesting to watch them go through and decide as a member of the Republican or Democratic party what are the issues that are most important to us?" says event organizer Kristen Lonergan

Wausau West student Zach Stanke won the Republican nomination in the mock election.
