A Stevens Point woman is now charged in connection to a protest at an Iron County mine site that reportedly turned violent.

According to the criminal complaint, Iron County deputies responded to the Gogebic Taconite mine site in the Town of Anderson, which borders Iron and Ashland counties, on June 11 for a protest that had gotten out of control.

Deputies said they encountered numerous obstacles on the way to the mine site, including boulders and branches across the road, which they said they believed were placed there to slow them down.

When officers arrived they said there were eight mine workers who explained the protesters, between 15-20, scattered into the woods prior to law enforcement arriving.

According to the criminal complaint, the workers said they were verbally and physically harassed, which they said included being hit by full soda cans and water jugs.

One of the alleged victims said one the protesters, which was described as the leader, noticed one of the mine workers video-taping her. That's when the protester, later identified as Katie Kloth, 26, became enraged and grabbed the camera from the worker's hands; according to the criminal complaint.

The alleged victims say the ordeal lasted about an hour.

Kloth made her initial appearance in Iron County Court Monday. She's charged with robbery with use of force, theft and two counts criminal damage to property. She's currently free on a $5,000 signature bond. Kloth was ordered to have no contact with the alleged GTAC victims.
