According to an alert from Wood County Dispatch a man believed to be a threat to himself and others has turned himself in to authorities.

Wood Co. dispatch received a call just after 9 p.m. Wednesday from a girl reporting an attempted assault on her mother by a male acquaintance at a home on 18th Ave. S near Grand Ave. in Wis. Rapids.

The suspect was identified as Matthew Lee Fosnot, 31, of Wis. Rapids.

When police arrived, they were told Fosnot had a gun and would "die in a gun battle."

Wis. Rapids Police, Wood Co. Sheriff and the Wis. Rapids Fire Tactical EMS Unit blocked off the surrounding streets while they tried to make contact with Fosnot. Police Chief Kurt Heuer says they had reason to believe the suspect was "anti-law enforcement."

"Wis. Rapids Special Response Team shortly after midnight did enter a residence on 18th Ave., cleared and secured that residence but did not locate Fosnot," Chief Heuer said. "It is now believed that he was able to leave prior to our arrival."

The mother and her daughter were not injured in the incident and were already outside the home when police arrived.

Neighbors were told to stay in their basements during the three-hour period when police thought there could be a standoff situation.

Fosnot was voluntarily taken into custody Thursday afternoon in Tomah.
