As a result of the $105 million settlement of a class action lawsuit over atrazine, Spencer Waterworks has received $25,604.47 to help reimburse the costs of removing the weed killer from its community water system.
Atrazine is sprayed on corn and other crops and frequently runs off of fields and into waterways used as drinking water sources.
Village Trustee and chairperson of the Utilities and Equipment Committee, Dianne Gilbert is pleased with this reimbursement. “We strive to offer the best possible services for our water residents as well as every tax payer in Spencer,” Dianne said.
Spencer Waterworks was one of 1,085 water systems to benefit from this settlement.
Individual amounts were calculated based on the contamination history of the claimants.
