MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The leader of the state Assembly says a long-time lawmaker from northeastern Wisconsin will call it quits.
Speaker Robin Vos, a Burlington Republican, released a statement Monday saying Rep. Garey Bies plans to retire. The statement did not say when Bies, a Sister Bay Republican, plans to step down. Bies didn't return messages left at his state Capitol office and at a district listing.
Bies, a former Door County sheriff's deputy, was first elected to the Assembly in 2000. He currently serves as chairman of the Assembly Corrections Committee.
