Snowshoers Take Over Rib Mountain

Some fresh snow fell on Granite Peak Friday night, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase winter wonder land. But instead of walking in it, you might want to consider another mode of transportation, snowshoeing.

"It's like walking around in a snow globe," snowshoeing enthusiast Mary Roberts described.

Roberts was one of the estimated 200 people who attended The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park snowshoe hike this Saturday.

"It's about an hour hike one way and they'll be seeing lots of rocks and trees and just peace and quiet... It's a way to get people up to the park in winter to enjoy the snow and the fresh air and just to be outside and see how beautiful this park is," President of The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park, Sheryl Hemp, told NewsChannel 7.

Both Roberts and Hemp agree, just about anyone can snowshoe.

"If I can do it anyone can do it," Roberts encouraged.

"It's one of the easiest forms of exercise in the winter. Anyone can do it. If you can walk you can snowshoe," Hemp said.

Roberts does have one piece of advice for beginners though, "Stay on the trails and follow the trails and that makes it super easy. That snow is packed down. If you want to get a little more adventuresome you can go off trail, but the trails are so well marked that really you can't get lost and you really can't screw it up."

If you missed Saturday's snowshoe hike, but would like to try it out, The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park have organized an evening snowshoe hike set for Saturday, January 26th. The event is free and they can even supply you with borrowed snowshoes. All they ask is for a small donation to help them re-build a picnic shelter that was torn down earlier this year.
