The snowmobiles are being put away, and the racers are heading back home. Today marks the end of the 10 day world snowmobile championship races in Eagle River.
The 49th annual AMS Oil World Snowmobile Championships brought in thousands of snowmobile racing enthusiasts to Eagle River. The championships give some of the best snowmobile racers in the world a chance to showcase their skills. The series kicked off last weekend, with vintage races, allowing racers to show their sleds from the 60's 70's and 80's.
The races continued on throughout the week, ending with snow cross championship races this afternoon. Event organizers say these races draw more and more people every year.
According to event marketing manager Richard Decker, this years events brought in some of the best numbers ever.
The vintage weekend races had more than 1,000 entries, something organizers say they've never seen before. This weekends snow-cross championships had more than 600 entries..
The track held 33 races, for the more than 400 drivers on hand. Organizers say the lack of snow, and warmer weather did not affect their total turnout
Organizers are already gearing up for next year's world championship races. It will mark the 50th anniversary of the AMS Oil World Championship snowmobile races.
