It's still not clear what caused an underground explosion on Stewart Ave. in Wausau on Thursday evening.

It happened about 5:45 p.m. between the La Quinta and Furniture and Appliance Mart. Officials say a fire started underground which created an explosion causing three manhole covers to fly into the air.

No injuries were reported; however, hotel guests had to be evacuated and moved to other hotels around the area.

It took fire crews about a half hour to put out the fire.

The road was closed for a short time Thursday evening, but has since reopened.
