MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Databases showing who signed recall petitions targeting Republican Gov. Scott Walker and five others will be made public.
Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board voted Friday to make the information public. The databases will show whether names were counted or rejected, the name of the signer with the page and line number, but no addresses.
Board staff was not unanimous in their recommendation, but ultimately determined making them public is the right decision given the high public interest in providing access to the databases.
Unlike when a person votes, signing a petition is a public act. Many judges, public officials and others who signed the petition have already been criticized after the posting of one searchable database of Walker petition signers created by tea party groups.
