A Waupaca County couple says the discovery they make while fishing last weekend is absolutely heart breaking.

Nikki Mitchell and John Kluck tell WLUK-TV while fishing at Comet Creek, south of Wittenberg, in neighboring Shawano County, they found a dead dog with a bag tied around its head.

“I realized there was a bag tied around its head and it was tied tightly in a double knot, so it wasn't like it was an accident,” Mitchell explained to WLUK.

The couple contacted the Shawano County Sheriff's Department that explains animal cruelty cases in the area have been rare.

Authorities say they had plans to pick the dog up, but Mitchell and Kluck beat them to it.

The couple says a veterinarian determined that the dog did not have an embedded microchip to help locate its owner.

Shawano County deputies say anyone with information about the case should call them at 715-526-3111.
