It's one of the top-rated golf courses in the Midwest. SentryWorld in Stevens Point announced Wednesday it will close for the 2013 season to undergo renovations and improvements.

While many area golfers are mourning the news, head golf pro Brian Dumler says it'll be well worth it.

"We're redoing all of the greens, all of the sand bunkers," Dumler said. "We're going to have some new golf holes, some holes will maybe turn from a par three to a par four. Some are going to be rerouted, and the practice field is actually going to be expanded."

The 30 year old course is going to be more average-golfer friendly in the hopes of bringing in beginners and bringing back people who've taken a break from the game.

"Some of the new greens are going to be more accessible to the average and higher handicap golfer," Dumler said. "Where this has always been a championship, pretty difficult golf course, we're going to make it a little more friendly because the game is growing and not everybody is really good."

But the experienced golfer need not worry. Dumler says the course will still be plenty challenging. Some new holes will use elevation and they'll make a couple short par fours that are drivable. In general, he says there will be more options for everyone. And the famous "Flower Hole", a 173 yard par three that is surrounded by flowers will not be going anywhere.

This is the first time the 6,900 yard course has closed for a full season. It's hosted several major tournaments, including the USGA National Women's Pub Links in 1986 and was slated to host the State Open next year before this announcement.

The owners aren't worried the temporary closure will affect business. They're counting on the improvements to help business in the long run because they believe the course will appeal to golfers of all skill levels.

It's expected to reopen by summer of 2014.
