It may be freezing outside, but realtors say the housing market is hot, especially in Marathon County. Thanks to the bad economy and record low interest rates, it's a buyers market. But what about sellers?
The Sturzenegger family of Weston is moving after 13 years in their home on Sandhill Drive.
"We decided to upgrade. The rates were so low and once we started checking into how much our mortgage would increase, we found out that it really didn't increase at all," Jackie Sturzenegger told NewsChannel 7.
The Sturzenegger 's put their home on the market in late December and have had two showings, which their realtor says is pretty good. But Jackie says she won't settle for pretty good. She wants sold. That's because they've already put an offer in on their dream house.
"As soon as we get our house sold, we could bump our offer up and move into this other house," Sturzenegger explained.
So the Sturzenegger's are doing all they can to set their house apart in an ever competitive market.
"I think there's a lot of houses out on the market for people to look at. But I think, in turn, it's kind of difficult for somebody to sell their house because there are so many options out there," Sturzenegger said.
To make a sale more appealing, the Sturzenegger's cut their asking price by $7,000 and made a few small improvements including installing new fans, changing the sink and upgrading the landscaping.
"Definitely invest somewhat. You don't have to put a lot of effort into it. Simple painting, again minor little things, replacing light bulbs making things look presentable," Sturzenegger advised.
As Sturzenegger reminds us, "It only takes ten minutes to walk into a house and say wow this is really neat!"
