A nationwide arrest warrant has now been issued for 41-year-old Illinois man accused of threatening and sexually assaulting a then 16-year-old girl in June 2012.
The Marathon County Deputy District Attorney said criminal charges were delayed as the investigators worked to identify the suspect. Theresa Wetzsteon said the only information they could go on was a street name and tattoos.
She said detectives were able to identify the suspect through a tip from someone within the prison system. She also said the suspect no longer looks similar to a photo they were working with, also making the case tough.
Marcos Antonio Hernandez is accused of raping the girl at a Wausau home on June 7, 2012.
Prosecutors have filed criminal charges of 2nd degree sexual assault, false imprisonment, and sex with a child 16-years or older.
If you have any information about the whereabouts of Hernandez, you're asked to call your local police department.
